The dangers of sun exposure and how you hydrate and protect your skin in the summer

The first warm rays can already be felt. In these hot months it is very important to take good care of your skin during these months. Although sunscreen protects your skin against UV-A and UV-B radiation, our skin expert Caroline van Eeuwijk explains how other products also your skin good sun care of your skin in times of a lot of sun.

Why do you have to wear sun protection exactly?

Wearing sunscreen is extremely important for your skin. Sunlight contains UV radiation. The UV radiation increases with the position of the sun and varies with the seasons and during the time of the day. When your skin is exposed to sunlight or UV rays, the skin will become thicker and melanine cells to the surface, so that your skin is a Sunkissed Tan gets.

The thickening of the skin is a natural protective reaction, as a shield against the UV rays. In combination with the production of melanin, your skin already protects itself against the sun. But it's not enough. Too much UV radiation can damage the DNA in our skin cells, which unfortunately can lead to skin cancer.

How does sunburn protect skin cancer?

Sunscreen physically protects your skin. The most important minerals that can be used in sunscreen are titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. They are completely harmless for your skin and reflect UV rays from the sun away from your skin before they can get in touch with it.

The Skin Cancer Foundation states that "Regular daily use of sunscreen SPF15 can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by around 40 percent and reduce your risk of melanoma [both types of skin cancer] by 50 percent."

The images below show clearly how much damage UV radiation can cause:

Do I have to wear sun protection if I have dark skin?

No sunscreen needs to wear because you have dark skin is a misconception! Although people with more melanin do not burn their skin quickly, there is still a (albeit reduced) risk of skin cancer.

People from all skin tones and types can get skin cancer, so it's better to be safe than sorry and to apply!

Will sun protection prevent the skin from being drunk? Will sun protection relieve the skin?

Although your skin would be much lighter than if you were to be exposed or burned without sunscreen to the sun, sunscreen does not prevent your skin from turning brown. However, it will certainly help prevent hyperpigmentation getting darker.

Regarding lighter skin, sunscreen will not change your skin color permanently or make it lighter than the original pigment. Over time, sunscreen can help level the skin color.

Does sun protection make the skin flourishing/fatty?

Whether sunscreen makes the skin greasy, silicone hide the pores again and stick to the skin and hair, causing hair fracture, of course in hair care products. Some sunscreen that contain mineral oils or silicones, however, have a drying effect and bring the skin out of balance.

If you wear a sunscreen that contains unnatural ingredients such as silicone, they will not absorb but flaking on the skin. If your skin flakes through dehydration, it is completely okay to use a moisturizing cream for sunscreen! Scroll down to the next part for more information.
