What is hyperpigmentation and how do you get rid of it?

Hyperpigmentation is a common phenomenon, especially during the summer months when the chance of getting these spots is greater than normal. But what exactly is hyperpigmentation? And how do you take care of it? The skin expert of Chicory Skincare, Caroline van Eeuwijk, explains it.

At Witlof Skincare we believe that every skin is unique and that this should be celebrated. We think it is important to teach you how to take good care of your hyperpigmentation, with happy and healthy skin as a result!

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation (or pigmentation spots) is caused by the accumulation of melanin cells in the skin, the cells responsible for your song -kust skin in the summer. This can be done due to hormonal changes, congenital skin conditions or sun damage.

Is pigmentation the same as hyper pigmentation?

No, they are not the same, but they are related! Pigmentation refers to the normal color of your skin. Hyperpigmentation ', on the other hand, refers to uneven pigmentation. These spots can be pink or red in color, but also darker brown, or just have a darker color of your skin color.

Have dark skin tones more chance of it?

Yes. Because dark skin naturally produces more melanin, overaccumulation of melanine cells in the skin is much more common. Direct exposure to the sun also makes stains of hyperpigmentation darker, and since it is a common misconception that people with dark skin do not have to use sunscreen, this can contribute to hyper pigmentation. Is hyperpigmentation skin cancer?

There is no connection between hyperpigmentation on the skin and skin cancer. Although the accumulation of certain types of cells can cause cancer, melanine cells do not belong to that. However, do not confuse a potentially dangerous spot with hyperpigmentation. Stains that are larger (2-3 centimeters), and that are inflamed can be dangerous. Consult a doctor if you are worried.

How long does it take before hyperpigmentation fades?

How long it takes before it fades depends on your individual condition, environment and skin care routine. Direct sun exposure makes these spots darker. This also depends on your genetics. On average it takes 6-12 months for hyperpigmentation to fade. View below how you can take good care of your skin!

How do you take care of hyperpigmentation?

To take care of your skin, you can do different things:

Applying a good natural sunscreen, such as the Nourishing Day Cream SPF 30 or Tinted Day Cream SPF 30, is the most important prevention against the development of hyperpigmentation.

The use of a fruit acid peel, such as the Smoothing Peel, can help, but don't forget to protect your skin against the sun.

Vitamin C Is a good remedy against it. Ingredients such as apple water and rose hole seed oil have the same effect. A touch of the Balancing Toner or a drop Regenerating Oil Serum Can help reduce pigmentation in the long term.

But ... patience is the key. Pigment spots can certainly fade with the right approach, but it is not going from one day to the next.
